Whenever I use the kickboard to practice my kicks, if I do just a regular flutterkick I don't go anywhere at all. Some have suggested a put a little "whip" onto my flutterkick like a whale's tail, but that doesn't work either. The only way I can go anywhere with a kickboard is when I use sort of a half-eggbeater/half-flutterkick. Is this normal?
I don't know if this is "normal" but if this is how you have to propel yourself through the water, then it works. More so than the straight flutterkicks you say. I would keep doing them until you can have a coach or somebody look at them. On the other hand, maybe they don't need "fixed" at all.
You can strengthen your kick by grabbing a dive brick/weight, and holding it, while treading water by just using flutterkick (no hands). You'll sink a lot at first, but try to do it for 30seconds at a time, and just like getting better at water treading "egg beater" style, your kick will get stronger.
this may sound like a dumb question, but do you have short legs and a long torso? At the comprise of my humility, I'm pretty good in the water, but due to my short lets and long ass torso, strap a kickboard on me and I hardly move.
As far as I'm concerened....if you're prepping for a pipeline, stop kickboard training and just fucking fin or do flutter kicks on the gunnal with your fins on and maybe a charged mask. Lead arm finning will make you better at finning. Don't bend at the knees, flutter kick as you fin on your side and you'll get better
Peyton's right on point here... kickboarding is for chicks...start finning with leading arm trailing arm and learn to kick from the hips.... keep practicing and it will come. The normal safe standard is 1 minute for every 50 meters while doing leading arm trailing arm.
rocketfins are the best for this, nice and solid. although I've now "broken in" mine to the point that the toe of one of them ripped open from wear/tear/torque. Got a growing stack of rocketfins.
